Historic Choice for the African Union

African leaders for the first time elected a woman to lead the African Union Commission on July 16. The New York Times reported Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, South Africa’s minister of home affairs, has been selected for the post. The commission serves as the administrative branch of the African Union, an organization of 54 African states. Ms. Dlamini-Zuma, 63, defeated the incumbent, Jean Ping of Gabon, and is the first South African to hold the post. The Women’s League of South Africa’s governing African National Congress party described her election as a victory for women across Africa, who have long been the victims of poverty, prejudice and oppression.
